Food bank sets competition
The Food Bank of Delaware, a non-profit agency working to end
hunger, will sponsor a Waste Not/ Want Not Food Olympics from 9:30
a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 17, and from noon-6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 18.
The olympics was started by the food bank staff with MBNA
America, as the first corporate sponsor. The olympics will host teams
of 10 competing to sort and pack the most pounds of grocery products
in boxes for Delaware's needy.
Laura Semian, a University student who has been a food bank
volunteer for two years through Circle K, Gamma Sigma Sigma and MBNA
America, is the campus coordinator.
The program is open to everyone, but Laura is hoping to get
several University teams.
"The goal is to increase University volunteerism at the food bank
and hopefully make the olympics an annual experience on campus," she
said. Some University teams already scheduled for this year are the
Wesley Foundation, Phi Sigma Pi, Beta Alpha Psi (students and
faculty), Gamma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Phi Omega and the honors program of
Dickinson Hall.
MBNA America won the olympics last year by sorting and packing
6,000 pounds of food in an hour. Laura is hoping for 10 teams that can
pack at least 30,000 pounds of food.
The packed food will be distributed among 150 agencies throughout
Delaware, including soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food closets and
senior centers.
Each team is asked to donate $10 to the Food Bank of Delaware. A
$100 prize will be given to the winning team, and each team member
will receive a certificate and a mug.
Teams may sign up by calling Semian at 738-3381 or Heather Fjare
of the food bank at 292-1305. The deadline is Oct. 9.
