Golf tourney, parade, pep rally kick off 1992 Homecoming
The University of Delaware is putting out the welcome mat for
alumni during the Homecoming 1992 celebration, scheduled Friday and
Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10.
The major event of the weekend will be the gridiron clash between
the Delaware Blue Hens and the Boston University Terriers, with the
kickoff at 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10. For information on general
admission tickets, call the ticket office at 831-2257.
Other highlights include a U. of D. Celebrity Golf Classic, the
second annual Campus 5K Run-A-Round, a cocktail reception, a dance at
the new Bob Carpenter Center, class reunions, a parade and pep rally.
The first U. of D. Celebrity Golf Classic will tee off the
weekend events. Player registration is at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 9,
at the Du Pont Country Club in Wilmington. Hosted by Dallas Green,
former Philadelphia Phillies manager, and benefiting the University of
Delaware's Athletic Scholarship Fund, the tournament offers various
levels of individual and corporate sponsorship.
Participating golfers will play with such well-known sports
figures as Green; Marty Bystrom, former Phillies pitcher; Ron Jaworski
and Mike Quick, former Eagles; Rick MacLeish, former Flyer; Hal Greer,
a member of the NBA Hall of Fame; Scott Brunner and Jeff Komlo, former
Blue Hen and NFL quarterbacks; and Blaise Giroso, Delaware state
amateur golf champion, among others.
There will be special events in the morning, with the tournament
beginning after lunch at 12:15 p.m. and celebrities joining foursomes
to play the course. The day will conclude with a Friday evening
cocktail, auction and awards party at 5:45 p.m. for participants and

A parade, followed by a pep rally, will be held at 4 p.m.,
Friday, Oct. 9, on the North Mall, between Harter and Brown residence
halls in the area bordered by Main Street and Delaware Avenue. Various
student groups, residence halls, fraternities and sororities will
march in the parade in costumes or with walking floats. The U.D.
Marching Band will informally march down the Mall, sounding the call
to students to come to the rally, before the event. Former and current
students and other fans, cheerleaders, the Delaware Precision Dance
Team, candidates for Homecoming queen and king and the band will then
join together to cheer for the Blue Hen team
The festivities will continue Oct. 9 with the Homecoming cocktail
reception from 6-7:30 p.m. at Clayton Hall, with hors d'oeuvres and a
cash bar. Cost is $8 per person.
Topping off Friday night will be the Homecoming dance in the new
Bob Carpenter Center from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Performing will be The
Fabulous Greaseband. Cost is $8 per person in advance and $12 at the
door.
The popular Campus 5K Run-A-Round, with walking and running
competitions for alumni, students and other athletes from under 18 to
over 60, will begin at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Blue and
Gold Club, 44 Kent Way. The Run-A-Round is sponsored by the College of
Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation. For alumni and the
general public who register by Oct. 7, the fee is $8; after that date,
registration is $10. For students, the fee is $6 by Oct. 7 and $8
after. All participants will receive T-shirts. For information and

Pre-game activities on Oct. 10 include the College of Business
and Economics Alumni Award of Excellence reception at 10 a.m. at
Clayton Hall. A tailgate party for alumni and guests will be held by
the college at 11 a.m. at a tent in the stadium area, with
refreshments provided. For information, call 831-2551.
The Black Alumni Organization will hold a tailgate party
beginning at 11 a.m. in the stadium area. For more information and

The College of Arts and Science will greet its alumni at a
Welcome-Back Tent outside of Delaware Stadium, where alumni can gather
with former classmates and faculty and meet with the college's dean,
Mary Richards.
The Office of Alumni Relations Hospitality Tent will be located
behind the Delaware Field House, next to the north end zone. Opening
at 11 a.m., it will provide a message board to help classmates contact
each other. The tent will also host the Goal Post Party immediately
after the game, with a cash bar and food available.
Concluding the Homecoming events will be reunions for 1952
chemical engineers and for the classes of 1942, 1957, 1967, 1972, 1982
and 1987.
