Cow extends win streak at state fair
I never saw a purple cow
But now at last I've seen one,
A champion cow, she stays unfazed,
Would rather graze, than be one.
(Apologies to Gelett Burgess)
Bonnie the guernsey has captured the purple for three years at the
Delaware State Fair, winning the accolade of Grand Champion and awarded the
purple rosette and a silver trophy, the highest honor a bovine can achieve.
Born and bred on the University Farm, she is about the fourth
generation of her family to call the University Farm home and has been
mother to five calves, the youngest born in December.
According to Jim Wolfer, farm superintendent, Bonnie is a working
parent and takes part in educational exhibits and programs in the state.
A 6-year-old milk cow, she won acclaim because she is well-built,
adhering most closely to the physical standards set for her breed.
Her trophy is on loan to John Nye, dean of the College of Agricultural
Sciences, for display in his office.
