UDRF stipends
The University of Delaware Research Foundation Inc. (UDRF)-a
non-profit, tax-exempt organization chartered primarily to support the
University's scientific research program-encourages members of the faculty
and professional staff to apply for funds, distributed annually on a
competitive basis.
The stipend for an individual project is $5,000 or one-ninth of the
academic year salary, whichever is less. The maximum amount for graduate
students supported under UDRF is a $9,650 stipend, plus tuition for nine
months and a $3,200 stipend for the summer.
Deadlines for submitting applications to department chairpersons are
Sept. 24 for the Block Grant Program and Oct. 8 for the Individual Grant
Program.

Convocation
Members of the University community are invited to attend the New
Student Convocation ceremony at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 31, on the
University Mall. James R. Soles, Distinguished Alumni Professor and
chairperson of the Department of Political Science and International
Relations, will address the new students.
The identity of the Francis Alison Award recipient-an outstanding
member of the faculty will be revealed at the ceremony, and the Medal of
Merit will be presented to Littleton P. Mitchell, former president of the
Delaware State Conference of Branches for the NAACP.
Members of the University community who plan to attend should contact
Joanne Forestell in admissions at 831-6331 no later than Aug. 25.
Club schedule
The main dining room at the Blue and Gold Club is open for lunch from
11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and for dinner from 5-8 p.m.,
Tuesday through Saturday.
The Tavern Dining Room and Bar, currently closed for renovations, are
scheduled to open this fall with a fresh, new look. From 4:30-7 p.m.,
Tuesday through Friday (weather permitting), the Tavern menu will be served
on the patio. Food is half price, and the prices of all bottled beers are
reduced by 50 cents.

Smokeless library
The Morris Library is a smoke-free facility. The change, effective
since Aug. 1, is in response to many reports about the danger of
second-hand smoke, which caused concern among library users. The new policy
also will reduce damage to library collections.
Office for sale
The University is selling a mobile office trailer in excellent
condition. On-site inspection is by appointment only.

Virden overnight
The University's Virden Center can provide convenient accommodations
to two upcoming Sussex County events.
The Lewes Waterfront Arts Festival will be held Aug. 21-22. University
employees may enjoy the events and stay at the Virden Center. Rooms with
double accommodations are available for $65 per night, with a two-night
minimum.
On Saturday, Nov. 6, the world championship Punkin' Chunkin' will be
held in Lewes. Rooms are available at the Virden Center for just $40 per
night, with a two-night minimum.

Literacy program
The Literacy Improvement Program will be available again this fall for
employees who wish to upgrade their reading, writing and spelling skills.
There are two sessions to choose from, from noon-2 p.m. and from 3-5
p.m., both held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Sept. 28.
The free sessions meet in the first floor conference room at 87 East
Main St.
