'Delaware Wartime' exhibit in library
"Delaware in Wartime," an exhibition portraying the roles Delaware and
Delawareans have played in times of war, will be on view in the Special
Collections Exhibition Gallery of the Morris Library from Aug. 25 through
Dec. 17.
The exhibit provides an opportunity to examine the contributions
Delaware and its citizens have made during times of war throughout history.
Particular attention is paid to the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and
World Wars I and II.
The exhibition features an interesting array of material from the
collections of the University Library. These items include books, diaries,
letters, photographs, advertising materials, artwork, manuscripts and
archival materials, sheet music, maps, documents, oral histories and
artifacts.
"Delaware in Wartime" documents such celebrated events as Caesar
Rodney's ride to Philadelphia to ensure that Delaware voted for
independence and the Battle at Cooch's Bridge; Delaware industries,
including the DuPont gunpowder mills, textile factories and shipbuilders,
which played an important role in the Civil War; Delaware troops that were
pressed into early service during World War I and formed a major component
of the 59th Pioneer Infantry, which saw action in France in the fall of
1918; and the rise of shipbuilding in the state during World War II.
The gallery is open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, and
until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays. The exhibition also will be open from 10 a.m.-2
p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, during the University's annual Homecoming
weekend.
