Four minority teachers help develop curricula standards
Four teachers from throughout Delaware participated in the Minority
Leadership Program of the Delaware Teacher Enhancement Partnership program
held last month on campus.
The quartet of educators who attended a week of planning classes under
the program were Doris Fader, from Milford Middle School, Milford School
District; Hermela Teferra, from George Read Middle School, Colonial School
District; James "Tim" Dennis, from Central Middle School, Capital School
District; and Yvonne Harper, from Gunning Bedford Middle School, Colonial
School District.
The program is part of a 45-month project of the University's
Mathematical Sciences Teaching and Learning Center, funded by a $1.1
million grant from the National Science Foundation.
The project, "Delaware Teacher Enhancement Partnership: A Model for
Implementing the NCTM Standards," is designed to help schools develop
teacher leadership and to enhance the quality of mathematics teachers in
the state.
According to Ronald Wenger, director of the Mathematical Sciences
Teaching and Learning Center, the program has two specific goals: to
develop mathematical power in teachers and to assist teachers in developing
standards for curricula in their classrooms.
Under the Minority Leadership Program, fellowships specifically for
minority teachers were presented to several educators. Prior to the
three-week summer workshop for secondary mathematics teachers, the minority
teachers spent five days on campus where they participated in seminars,
familiarized themselves with materials and, with help from University
faculty, prepared lesson plans for the upcoming school year.
In addition, the minority fellows prepared overview presentations and
lesson plans of upcoming course materials and mathematical topics. These
were later presented to other secondary school teachers from schools
located throughout the state who attended the three-week Summer 1993
Partnership Workshop program in late July and early August.
