Panamanian dancers to perform Aug. 16
The exciting and colorful Folkloric Dance Group of the University of
Panama in Chiriqui will offer a free performance at 7:30 p.m. on Monday,
Aug. 16, in Newark Hall auditorium.
This energetic group of students and adults of all ages comes to the
University from the Chiriqui Province of Panama, located near the Costa
Rican border. The group has been raising funds for over a year to travel to
the United States, particularly to Delaware, Panama's sister state in the
Partners of the Americas program.
The group has received national first place awards for performances in
Panama. It also has traveled throughout Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic
and Jamaica. Prior to visiting Delaware, the group will compete in
international dance festivals in Rexburg, Ohio and Ennis, Montana. After
the Delaware performance, the group will perform at the Inter-American
Development Bank in Washington, D.C.
The performers have recorded two albums, Christmas Carols of Panama
and Folkloric Liturgy in Honor of the Savior, and they have produced an
award-winning video.
Their performing themes include cultural aspects of Panama, traditions
and projections of the Isthmus and cultural and historic configurations of
the Isthmus. During a performance, ideas are presented through music,
dance, theatre, myths, legends, choreography, poems and song, all
indigenous to Panama.
The traveling group will include 24 dancers; five musicians; Elsa
Caballero, director of cultural affairs of the University of Panama in
Chiriqui; and Franco Poveda, a renowned national specialist and instructor
in folklore. Esmit Carmargo, director of the University of Panama at
Chiriqui, also will travel with the group to strengthen ties with his
counterparts at the University of Delaware.
The cultural exchange program is being sponsored by Delaware-Panama
Partners of the Americas, People to People International, Goldey Beacom
College and the University of Delaware.

International math experts on campus
The sixth international conference on the teaching of mathematical
modeling and applications (ICTMA 6) will be held at the University of
Delaware Aug. 15-19. This marks the first time the conference has been held
outside Europe.
The main purpose of the conference is to provide a forum for the
presentation and exchange of information, experiences, views and ideas
among individuals engaged in research on or practice in the teaching of
mathematical modeling, models and applications. Some 300 mathematicians
from around the world are expected to attend.
Mathematical modeling is the process of taking a real world situation
and translating it into mathematics. The model leads to problems that
hopefully can be solved mathematically and then the results applied to the
real world, according to Cliff Sloyer, professor of mathematical sciences
and director of the conference.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recently has developed
a set of guidelines that strongly recommends modeling in math curricula for
students from kindergarten through grade 12, Sloyer added.
The focus of the August conference at the University will be on the
teaching of mathematical modeling. Middle school, high school and college
levels will be included.
The conference will include lectures, parallel sessions for
contributed papers, workshops, exhibitions and demonstrations. Particular
emphasis will be given to providing opportunities for formal and informal
interaction among conference participants.
The conference will be held in Clayton Hall.
