Securities Assn. recognizes Delaware's Stock Market Game
The Delaware Council on Economic Education, whose programs are
implemented by the Delaware Center for Economic Education at the University
of Delaware, was the 1993 recipient of the L. Massey Clarkson Jr. Award.
The national award, sponsored by the Securities Industry Association (SIA),
recognizes the Stock Market Game (SMG) that has accomplished the greatest
enhancements to its program.
The SMG is an educational project, sponsored nationally, that is
designed to help students learn about the financial and economic systems of
the United States.
Each year the Securities Industry Association selects one state SMG to
be recognized for excellence in administration, expansion, creativity,
fundraising and university, newspaper and corporate involvement. This year
the Delaware program received the honor from among 47 participating states.
Since 1984, the Delaware Council on Economic Education has made the
SMG available to Delaware schools by providing game registration,
in-service training and curriculum materials for teachers, classroom
resources and award ceremonies for winning teams. Each year approximately
60 Delaware teachers use the program, reaching more than 2,000 students in
grades four through 12.
The SMG is a computer-based portfolio management simulation that
motivates learning about economics, financial markets and the stock markets
in particular.
In conjunction with an appropriate course, typically social studies,
teams of students invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stock on the New
York and American Stock Exchanges and the NASDAQ National Market System.
They work together to increase their team's portfolio as much as
possible during 10-weeks by gathering information and marking decisions to
buy and sell based on their information.
They learn firsthand how to read stock tables, financial statements
and annual reports; compute brokerage fees; relate political and economic
events that impact on stock prices; and work productively in groups.
Gail Funk, program coordinator at the Delaware Center for Economic
Education, was presented an engraved plaque and a $2,000 grant for the
Delaware SMG program at a recognition dinner held June 6 in Boise, Idaho.
