Electronics engineer named General Electric graduate fellow
Lisa McMichael Marvel, who will begin graduate studies in electrical
engineering at the University this fall, has received a General Electric
Foundation fellowship under its Faculty for the Future Program. The grant
covers tuition, plus a $15,000 stipend.
Marvel was nominated by Robert G. Hunsperger, professor of electrical
engineering and chairperson of the department's graduate committee.
Originally employed by the Department of Defense while attending
college on a part-time basis, Marvel became a computer programmer/analyst
with the research and development team working on weapon systems test
instrumentation.
Exposed to many aspects of engineering on the job, she decided to
pursue a baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering at the University
of Pittsburgh and was awarded a fellowship by the Department of Defense.
Currently employed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland as an
electronics engineer, Marvel said she hopes to become a university teacher
and researcher.
Calling her record impressive, GE Foundation president Clifford V.
Smith Jr. wrote that Marvel "appears to be precisely the kind of
high-quality student we are hoping to interest in an academic career."
