Up and coming
World music sounds in concert July 15
The unique sounds of Tony Vacca and Tim Moran, musicians who combine
African folk and American jazz, can be heard at 8 p.m., Thursday, July 15,
in the Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building. Guest
artist is Foday Musa Suso.
Vacca and Moran are a percussionist and reedman who have been working
together for over 20 years. Suso of Gambia is a Mandingo griot, a
hereditary musician and oral historian, who plays the kora, a 21-stringed
West African harp, and other traditional instruments.
The three synthesizers have been working together since l986 to shrink
the distance between musical cultures.
Vacca and Moran explore the roots of jazz from a fresh perspective.
Combining the sounds of the West African balafon, a wooden xylophone, and
the saxophone and flute, they create a sound that balances tradition with
innovation and links contemporary jazz to its African heritage.
Their sound can "swing with subtle echoes of high life and salsa, or
rock out with an urgency that says made in the USA," one critic wrote.
Their two recordings are entitled "City Spirits" and "Wizard's Dance."
Suso has toured throughout Africa and Europe and established himself
in the U.S. in 1977. He sought out musicians capable of playing African
rhythms and founded the Mandingo Griot Society.
In 1984, he collaborated with Herbie Hancock on the official theme
music for Olympic field events and has since appeared on many of Hancock's
records and at concerts. Their duet album Village Life was universally
acclaimed, and their "Jazz-Africa" concert was filed by
Lorimar-Telepictures and released on both videocassette and compact disc.
Tickets will be available at the door for $8 for the general public
and $5 for students and senior citizens.
The concert is sponsored by the Office of University Relations.
