Employee annual giving sends important message
Materials for the FY '94 Employee Annual Campaign were distributed to
full-time employees last week. This campus effort is an important part of
the University's overall fund-raising program.
According to Wanda Simons, coordinator of annual giving, during the
current (FY '93) giving year that will end June 30 current and past
employees contributed over $170,000 to the University, with $34,000 of that
total coming through the Employee Annual Campaign.
According to Charles Forbes, vice president for development and alumni
relations, "Employees who give to the University demonstrate a great
concern for and interest in the importance of education. When they
contribute, they send a message to many other alumni and friends about the
important work that's undertaken by the University family. Of course, the
administration is grateful for the generosity of our employees in all the
ways they work toward the success of the University, and their gifts that
help strengthen academic programs and campus-wide services are especially
appreciated."
Forbes noted that employees are very knowledgeable about the
University and its needs; their gifts are symbolic of the confidence they
have in its programs. In addition, a high level of employee participation
encourages alumni and friends outside the University to contribute.
Simons said, "Designating to an area of specific interest is popular,
as is the payroll deduction option which often makes giving a significant
amount more manageable."
She noted that 72 percent of those contributing through the employee
campaign used payroll deduction, while another 26 percent gave outright
gifts and 2 percent requested pledge reminders during the year.
Three-fourths of the donors designated their gifts to a particular use. Of
our employee donors, 29 percent are alumni who find the employee campaign a
convenient way to contribute to the University, Simons added.
Forbes noted that the Employee Annual Campaign is but one way for
faculty, professionals and staff to make a charitable contribution to the
University. Some employees choose to make gifts-in-kind of books,
collections or equipment. These gifts are not received through the employee
campaign but count significantly toward the giving totals for the year.
Forbes emphasized that all gifts are greatly appreciated by the areas to
which they are designated.
In the fall, a committee of college representatives will promote the
1993-94 campaign throughout the campus. Any employee who wishes to
contribute or pledge now and has not received materials should contact
Simons in the development office at 831-2104.
