Annual Summer by the Sea festival to open in Lewes July 10
The diverse sounds of the Delaware Symphony, the Jimmy Dorsey
Orchestra and Flor De Cana will float out over the sands of Lewes next
month as the University of Delaware presents its fifth annual University by
the Sea Summer Arts Festival. Also included is a special event for
children, the American Family Theatre's production of Beauty & the Beast.
"We think this year's entertainment is truly outstanding. It features
everything from the treasures of symphonic music to the excitement of the
spirited Latin American sound to the thrill of first-class, live children's
theatre to the memories evoked by the Big Band sound," Gary Simpson,
assistant director of University relations, said. 'We think this is the
best all-round talent ever assembled on the shores of Lewes Harbor."
All events take place outside at the University's College of Marine
Studies, 700 Pilottown Rd. in Lewes. Seating is on the grass, and audience
members are urged to bring blankets or lawn chairs.
Festival '93 opens on Saturday, July 10, with The Cape Concert by the
Delaware Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Gunzenhauser, musical
director. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. when audience members are
encouraged to bring a picnic and listen to the sounds of the Sin City Band.
The symphony will perform at 8 p.m., and the program will include
Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, with the Lancaster Cannon Company. The evening
will conclude with a gigantic fireworks finale. The symphony performance is
sponsored by Bank of Delaware, and the fireworks finale is sponsored by
WBOC-TV.
On Thursday, July 15, the festival continues when American Family
Theatre presents the all-time favorite, Beauty & The Beast at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, July 16, treat yourself to the irresistible and danceable
sounds of Flor De Cana, whose musical repertoire is unmatched in the world
of Latin music. Show time for this concert is 7:30 p.m. Flor De Cana is
sponsored by Townsend's Inc.
The festival concludes on Saturday, July 17, with the sentimental
sounds of the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Audience members are invited to bring
a picnic and hear the opening act, The Elderly Brothers, at 7 p.m. and
dance under the stars with the orchestra at 8 p.m. Again, the evening
concludes with a fireworks spectacular. The Elderly Brothers, two
University English professors, perform humorous concerts of rock 'n' roll
oldies and topical songs. The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and fireworks finale
are sponsored by Wilmington Trust.
