Pierre D. Hayward selected as new University secretary

     Pierre D. Hayward of Greenville, currently senior vice president and
corporate affairs division manager at Delaware Trust Co. in Wilmington, has
been named secretary of the University of Delaware, President David P.
Roselle announced June 1.
     The appointment is effective July 1.
     In his new position, Hayward will be responsible for providing overall
support to the Board of Trustees, serving as staff officer to the board and
the president.
     "I am pleased Pete Hayward has accepted this important position,"
Roselle said, "and I am confident he will make valuable contributions as a
member of the University's senior management team.
     "Pete has a wide range of administrative experience, is very involved
in community affairs and knows the people and programs of Delaware
extremely well. We are confident that he will assist in the further
development of the University of Delaware," Roselle said.
     "I feel particularly fortunate," Hayward said, "to have the
opportunity to work with David Roselle and his senior staff in meeting the
institutional challenges that lie ahead. I think there is a clear sense in
the community that the University is in the process of enhancing both its
regional and national stature of academic excellence. I look forward to
being part of that exciting challenge."
     Hayward succeeds G. Arno Loessner, who has requested to return to the
professional staff of the College of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.
     Hayward joined the staff at Delaware Trust in 1984, after serving for
10 years as executive assistant to Delaware's U.S. Sen. William V. Roth. At
the bank, he has responsibility for corporate administration and public
relations; external communications, including advertising; office systems;
and facilities management.
     A 1970 graduate of Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., Hayward holds a
bachelor's degree in history. He is an Air Force veteran, serving in
Vietnam from 1971-72.
     In the community, Hayward serves on the boards of the Delaware State
Chamber of Commerce, the Delaware Bankers Association, the Grand Opera
House, Peninsula United Methodist Homes, on the residence committee board
of Eleutherian Mills (Hagley), on the executive committee of Tower Hill
School's Alumni Council and on the advisory board of the University's
Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management Program.
     He is treasurer and a member of the executive committee of the World
Affairs Council; is a trustee of the Wilmington Medical Center and Goldey
Beacom College; is past president of the Delaware chapter of the American
Heart Association; and is New Castle County finance co-chairperson of the
Republican State Committee.
     There were approximately 150 applications received for this position.
The search committee, chaired by Maxine Colm, vice president for employee
relations, included trustees and members of the University administration.
