Joint cardiac program announced
The University's College of Physical Education, Athletics and
Recreation has announced a new University-based Cardiac and Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program, planned in collaboration with the Medical Center of
Delaware.
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program is intended for individuals who
have completed participation in an outpatient, phase two (or monitored)
cardiac rehabilitation program.
Individuals considered to be cardiac prone or interested in preventing
cardiovascular disease also will be considered for enrollment.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed for persons with mild
to moderate lung disease, which may include but is not limited to
emphysema, asthma and bronchitis.
The major emphasis is on overall body and respiratory conditioning.
The Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Programs are held in the
gymnasium of Newark Hall on Academy Street in Newark.
Participants meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week for an
hour of exercise. The sessions consist of exercises to improve
cardiorespiratory fitness, flexibility and strength levels, as well as
recreational activities designed for enjoyment.
Exercise physiologists monitor participants to ensure a safe yet
maximum training effect. An individualized program is developed for each
participant and modified based on mutually agreed upon goals.
Equipment available includes treadmills, stationary bikes, free
weights, rowing machines, stair master and gymnasium for recreational
activities. Select educational offerings will be conducted jointly by the
Medical Center and University program personnel.
Cost of a l5-week program meeting three times a week is $200. Some
scholarship money is available for the pulmonary program.
Participants for both programs must be referred by a family physician,
pulmonologist or cardiologist.
For more information or to obtain a referral form, call Meg McDowell,
program coordinator, at 831-4075.
