Five outstanding graduates added to Wall of Fame
Five alumni were inducted into the University's Wall of Fame May 13 in
recognition of their outstanding professional achievements.
Joining the roster are John L. Anderson of Pittsburgh, William R.
Baldt of Newark, J. Edward LeGates of Franklinton, N.C., LaVera L. Leonard
of Alexandria, Va., and Susan P. Stroman of New York City.
Annual selections are made by the Alumni Association Awards Committee.
Begun in 1984, the Wall of Fame, which highlights the professional
achievements of its graduates, is displayed in the Alumni Room of the
Perkins Student Center.
Anderson, Delaware '67, is a professor and head of the chemical
engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Recently inducted into the National Academy of Engineering, he received the
Professional Progress Award from the American Institute of Chemical
Engineers.
Baldt, Delaware '57 '67M, president of Goldey-Beacom College in
Wilmington, since 1977, has initiated numerous undergraduate and graduate
programs and established a scholarship endowment that now exceeds $1
million. The campus' facilities have grown to include two residence halls
and a college center and expanded library. Under Baldt's leadership,
Goldey-Beacom has reached Senior Institution of Higher Education status.
LeGates, Delaware '43, William Neal Reynolds Professor at North
Carolina State University, was dean of the school of Agriculture and Life
Sciences there from 1971 until his retirement in 1986. Former president of
the American Dairy Science Association, he has been active in the American
Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of
Sciences.
Leonard, Delaware '71 '78M, is senior vice president for corporate
affairs with the Home Builders Institute, the educational arm of the
National Association of Home Builders. Leonard organized the first national
homeless symposium. She has been extensively involved with Job Corps, the
oldest and largest federally funded residential education and training
program for youth and young adults.
Stroman, Delaware '76, received the Tony Award and Drama Desk Award in
1992 for choreography of the Broadway show Crazy for You. She co-conceived
and choreographed the critically acclaimed off-Broadway show And The World
Goes 'Round, for which she received the Outer Critics Award, the Calloway
Award and the 1992 Drama League Award.
