Trustees authorize plans for new campus student center
The University of Delaware Board of Trustees at its regular semiannual
meeting May 26 in Clayton Hall authorized the University administration to
proceed with plans for a new student center on the Newark campus.
The new 100,000-square-foot facility will be located near Daugherty
Hall, bounded by West Main Street and West Delaware and South College
avenues. The $27 million project, which also includes a garage with more
than 600 parking spaces, will be supported from a variety of sources,
including a student fee.
In other action, the trustees approved increases in room and board
rates and other incidental fees. Because of the decision to enhance
resident student life, making it possible for room access to cable
television and data networks, housing rates were raised an average of 6.7
percent. Contract meal plans will increase an average of 7.85 percent.
The Board of Trustees also passed resolutions:
* establishing a tax-exempt organization to administer the Karl W.
Boer Solar Energy Medal of Merit, which honors the founder of the
University's Institute of Energy Conversion (The first medal was
presented earlier this year to former President Jimmy Carter.);
* changing the name of the master's degree awarded in the College
of Nursing to Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.), in keeping
with language used in the nursing profession, effective Sept. 1,
1993;
* establishing the Barbara A. Cossoy Memorial Fund to support
financial assistance to physical therapy students, honoring the
late director of the program;
* authorizing a bequest from the estate of Alberta E. Edge of
Hockessin to benefit the Departments of Chemistry and
Biochemistry and Music and the General Alumni Scholarship Fund;
* clarifying University policies to include limitations on
investment in money market mutual funds, and redefining the
procedure on interim investment decisions on common stocks;
* adopting regulations on the resident/non-resident classification
of students for tuition and fee purposes;
* approving a mission statement for the University as recommended
by the University Faculty Senate in so far as it does not
conflict with the University's present charter;
* authorizing the University administration to proceed with
renovation of Colburn Laboratory and several additional projects,
including renovation of the Perkins Student Center, Mitchell
Hall, Robinson Hall, Cannon Laboratory, Virden Center, Delaware
Field House, Newark Hall Math Center, Pencader Dining Complex,
Harrington fitness center and work on the east stands of Delaware
Stadium and the football field;
* congratulating basketball coach Steve Steinwedel, his staff and
team "for an outstanding season and for enhancing the prestige of
the University's athletic program"; and
* authorizing the president of the University to confer degrees at
Commencement on Saturday, May 29.
The trustees also passed a resolution expressing "their deepest
admiration and sincerest gratitude" to R.R.M. (Ruly) Carpenter III, the
trustee who chaired the private fund-raising campaign for the Bob Carpenter
Sports/Convocation Center, named in honor of his father, who was a generous
benefactor and long-time member of the board. The resolution commended
Carpenter for "his leadership and for his commitment and dedication to the
University and to the entire Carpenter family for their continuing
benevolence and generosity."
