Top senior athletes honored
Marnie Giunta and Bill Vergantino were named Delaware's 1993
outstanding senior male and female athletes earlier this month at the
annual men's and women's intercollegiate athletic banquets.
A standout in cross country and track and field, Giunta earned 10
varsity letters and was a member of four conference championship teams
during her career. She also was named outstanding performer in cross
country.
Giunta, who will graduate this June, maintained a 3.358 grade point
average as an accounting major. She was the 1991 North American Conference
scholar-athlete for women's cross country and is an academic all-American
candidate.
Vergantino, a four-year starter and letter winner as quarterback for
the Blue Hen football team, is the first football player to win the award
since 1990. He led the Hens to their best season in over a decade in 1992,
and finished his career holding 24 Delaware school records, the most by any
player.
He was voted state of Delaware Athlete of the Year for 1992 by the
Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters earlier this winter. An honors
student with a 3.0 average, Vergantino received his degree in business
finance in January.
