Affiliation affirms national reputation
The University's Student Services for Athletes program has been
recognized in a special way by Springfield College of Massachusetts.
The New England institution, site of one of the premiere athletic
counseling programs in the country, requires that its students participate
in a practical internship as part of their degree requirements. This fall,
graduate students from Springfield College will conduct these internships
on the University of Delaware campus through the Student Services for
Athletes program.
Janice Jordan, Student Services for Athletes director and associate
director of the Center for Counseling and Student Development, had met
members of Springfield's counseling staff at several national conferences
during the last five years. In the spring of 1992, Springfield personnel
approached the University about its students studying on the Delaware
campus.
Arrangements eventually were made to accept two Springfield graduate
students as interns for10-month periods, beginning in the fall semester of
1993.
Jordan said the resulting agreement will serve students and personnel
at both institutions. The University of Delaware, she said, is satisfied
that its Student Services for Athletes program has been recognized as one
with an established, high-quality reputation. The affiliation with
Springfield also offers a degree of national recognition, especially since
it is well known that Springfield is very selective about where its
students study, she said.
In addition, Jordan said, the presence of two more trained individuals
will allow the University to expand existing services to a certain degree.
While supervising the student interns will demand more of Jordan's
attention, the program director said the added responsibilities will be
well worth the effort.
Jordan said she believes Springfield selected the University of
Delaware because of the program's comprehensive nature, involving
counseling, workshops, academic monitoring and consultations.
Since the Newark-based program started in 1987, Jordan said, its
services have made a major difference in the academic and athletic careers
of many of the University's student athletes.
