Special training for new users
CNS User Services is offering intensive training for new users of the
central UNIX systems (e.g., Brahms) who need to learn SAS or are migrating
their SAS or SPSS files from VM/CMS (UDelVM) to the UNIX systems. This
represents the first wave of extensive assistance for different groups of
users migrating from the IBM 3090 to UNIX over the next year.
The changeover of all academic computing to the UNIX systems is
described in the May issue of Computing News. The article is also on line
on U-Discover! Type "gopher" on any central system (including UDelVM) and

Welcome the Sun 2000.
Assistance for SAS and SPSS is available. The first-phase
"Introduction to UNIX" training will be offered in two formats
(instructor-led and self-paced) and is a prerequisite to the SAS and SPSS
training. Classes for Introduction to UNIX: Managing your files, Pine mail,
and the Pico editor are scheduled. They include:
* Instructor-led classes, with step-by-step hands-on exercises, to
be offered three times-from 9 a.m. - noon, June 7 and 11; and
from 1:30-4:30 p.m., June 8,
* Self-paced format, working through printed tutorials with staff
assistants, to be offered from 9 a.m.-noon, June 9; and from
1:30-4:30 p.m., June 10.
The sites for these and other classes will be 116 Newark Hall Training
Center.
The second training phase will help current SAS and SPSS users
transfer their files from UDelVM to the UNIX systems and modify them to run
in the new environment. These classes are:
"Migration of SPSS files," using an instructor-led format, will be
offered twice, from 2-4 p.m., June 14, and from 10 a.m.-noon,
June 16.
"Migration of SAS files," using an instuctor-led format, will be
presented twice, from 10 a.m.-noon, June 14, and from 2-4 p.m.,
June 16.
There also is a two-part class for new SAS users. "Introduction to
SAS," in a instruictor-led format, from 1:30-4:30 p.m., June 15 and June
17.
During June 7-18 additional consulting help will be provided for SAS
and SPSS changes. Other groups will be targeted during other parts of the
summer and fall. SAS and SPSS users should try to take advantage of the
June 7-18 concentrated assistance period.
To participate in these classes, users must have an active UNIX
account.
Many users will also need to increase their disk use quota. Each
cylinder of disk space on UDelVM is approximately 0.6 megabytes. The
default disk quota on the UNIX systems is 3 megabytes for faculty and 1.5
megabytes for students.
Users requesting more UNIX system disk space are advised to allow the
CNS System Security and Access Office (002 Smith, 831-6000) at least seven
days to process the request.
Users should bring their copy of Using Electronic Communication on the
UNIX Systems and the UNIX Handbook, (both written by User Services
andavailable at the University Bookstore) to the classes.
To register for these training sessions, send mail to usered@brahms.
Be sure to include name, department, class for which you are
registering and a phone number. Users may register by contacting Debbie
Cannon at 831-8445.
Users are advised to see the May issue of Computing News for other
information on the migration.
