Rabies alert; Preventable if treated

     A raccoon found on the University's South Mall the morning of
Thursday, May 6, was rabid. The animal, which exhibited erratic behavior,
was spotted in the vicinity of Laurel Hall around 11 a.m. and was tracked
to the Academic Services Center at 231 South College Ave., where it was
tranquilized and evaluated for rabies.
     Anyone having direct contact with this raccoon via a bite, scratch or
contact with its saliva is advised to seek immediate medical attention at
the Student Health Service, the Newark Emergency Center, the Christiana
Hospital Emergency Room or a family physician.
     When left untreated, rabies is an almost always fatal viral disease
that is transmitted by the bite or scratch of an infected animal or
exposure to its infected saliva.
