Harrington, Newark alumni are '93 'outstanding' award winners
JoAnne Collier Shaw of Newark and H. Wesley Towers Jr. of Harrington
have been named the University's Outstanding Alumni for 1993.
The recognition, presented annually by the alumni association since
1952, honors service to the organization and to the University. The awards
were made at the annual Student and Alumni Leaders Dinner, held April 21 on
the Newark campus.
A Delaware Diamond, Shaw has been a board member of the Human
Resources Alumni Association (HRAA) for five years and served one term as
president.
Formerly the HRAA's representative to the Alumni Association Board of
Directors, she served on an ad hoc committee that was instrumental in
securing state funding for the expansion of Alison Hall, home of the
College of Human Resources. She has been active in fund-raising activities
on behalf of the college.
Currently, Shaw chairs of the 75th Anniversary Fund for the design and
construction of a new lounge in Alison Hall for use by faculty, staff,
students and alumni.
Shaw received both her bachelor's degree in 1960 and her master's
degree in 1975 from the University, both in textiles and clothing.
Towers, state veterinarian for the Delaware Department of Agriculture,
earned a bachelor's degree with honors and distinction in animal and
poultry science from the University in 1964.
He has been a Kent County alumni representative and a member of the
Agricultural Alumni Association Board and was board president from 1991-93.
Towers was recently re-appointed to his position on the Agricultural
Alumni Board and was elected to a three-year term on the Alumni Association
Board of Directors.
Additionally, he is a member of the Alumni Association Career Planning
Advisory Committee and has participated in the Alumni Board's phonathon,
the Spend the Day with the Student Alumni Association event and the Alumni
in the Classroom program.
State veterinarian since 1969, Towers received the 1990 George M.
Worrilow Award for outstanding service to agriculture; received the 1992
Department of Agriculture Employee of the year Award; and was recently
selected to receive the 1993 Delaware Award for Excellence and Commitment
to state service.
