Welcome home; First members of Gold Guard celebrate Spring Reunion

In recognition of those who have achieved 50 years or more of alumni
status, the Alumni Association has created the Gold Guard.
At a ceremony during Alumni Spring Reunion on May 1, Association
President Steven W. Bonine, Delaware '78, honored the class of 1943 and
alumni of earlier classes as charter members of the Gold Guard.
More than 200 alumni and guests gathered at a morning reception at the
president's home hosted by President and Mrs. David P. Roselle.
They later took a campus bus tour and attended a luncheon in the Bob
Carpenter Center.
Class representative M. Elizabeth Cloud, Delaware '33, called the
introduction of the Gold Guard a compliment to the older alumni. "I think
it is a valuable new creation," she said.
"The fact that so many more alumni came is a tribute to the plan to
specially focus on the older group. There were alumni attending who hadn't
been to any event for years.
"I thought it was lovely day all the way through," said the retired
Wilmington High School administrator who joined 21 classmates in
celebrating their 60th reunion.
"The privilege of seeing the Carpenter Center was a welcome one. I
think a lot of people who hadn't seen it were surprised. It was kind of
overwhelming."
Walter J. Dougherty, Delaware '43, of Houston, Texas, decided to make
Alumni Spring Reunion his first real visit to campus in 50 years. "The
occasion had momentous importance to me," said the retired process design
director with Foster Wheeler Corp. He enjoyed getting reacquainted with two
fellow chemical engineers from his class.
Dougherty said he likes the formation of the Gold Guard: "I think it's
something that puts us together again."
In remarks at the luncheon, vice president for development, Charles M.
Forbes told the Gold Guard: "You recognize the University of Delaware as
the place where you received the education necessary for your successes in
life, the place where you met the friends you now see beside you, the place
you want to protect and preserve for future generations. This University
now houses the environment for learning that you want to guard for the next
century's students."
