Diversity training workshops scheduled from May 24-26
The Commission to Promote Racial and Cultural Diversity will sponsor
diversity training workshops later this month for members of the University
community interested in becoming diversity trainers.
The all-day workshops will be held from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.,
Monday-Wednesday, May 24-26, in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student
Center. Space is limited to 50 people. Persons from all employee groups are
urged to attend, she said.
Supervisors are encouraged to give interested employees time off to
take the training, Judith Y. Gibson, assistant vice president for
affirmative action and multicultural programs, said.
According to Gibson, those who complete diversity training are
expected to help offer diversity training to other University groups. One
of the first projects for the new trainers will be to assist with diversity
education workshops during New Student Orientation.
"Diversity training is very valuable," Gibson said. "The University is
committed to increasing diversity, and this is one way we are able to work
toward achieving that goal. Workshops such as these help us to improve the
climate individual by individual."
On May 24, the workshop will be presented by Robert C. Buchanan and
Linda Lucero of the National Coalition Building Institute. On May 25 and
May 26, members of the University community will provide training.
In a letter to Gibson, Buchanan outlined his plans for integrating new
members into the established diversity training team and for enhancing the
team's ability to carry out its diversity mission at the University.
