Newark Community Day-a fun-filled day of live music, exhibits and
food-will be held Sunday, Sept. 20, with proceeds benefiting the
Newark Safety Town Program.
The 21st annual event will take place on the University Mall
beginning at 10 a.m. and is expected to draw more than 15, 000 guests.
The rain date is Sunday, Sept. 27.
Nearly 300 Newark residents or representatives of community
groups will be on hand to provide the festive day. Some highlights
include rock, blues, folk and electric guitar music groups, which will
be appearing on two stages throughout the event.
Food available will include everything from funnel cakes to corn
dogs. Ethnic dishes, such as Mexican, Greek, Chinese and Italian
specialties, also will be served.
A variety of antiques and collectibles will be displayed at the
bazaar, which will feature baseball cards, vintage clothing and dolls.
Also attracting attention will be live performances by the
Delaware Dance Company, Jazzercise and Olympiad Gymnastics.
Political officials and candidates will be present to answer
questions, hear opinions and discuss issues with members of the
community. The Department of Elections will have a van on Delaware
Avenue, where eligible Delawareans will be able to register to vote.
Numerous University organizations will be represented at booths,
displaying materials that will reflect the teaching, research and
service programs in their respective fields.
The University plays a major role in Community Day. "Besides
providing the location, 75 percent of our 200 volunteers are
University students. This event would not be the same without their
wonderful cooperation," according to Carol Houck, city of Newark
recreation supervisor for community events and coordinator of the
annual weekend festival.
"We enjoy the diversity of working with the students and
appreciate their efforts each year," Loretta Dworsky, administrative
assistant in the Office of University Relations, said.
More important than what the University contributes to the event
is what Community Day does for the students. "The purpose of Community
Day is to bring everyone together. Students, especially freshmen, will
have the chance to learn about the people and place where they now
live. Just about every group in the area will be participating," Houck
noted.
