Girls Inc. auction
Girls Inc. of Delaware will hold its 12th annual artists assembly
and auctions at 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Wilmington Country
Club. The event includes dinner and silent and live auctions. In
addition to support from over 25 local artists, many area merchants
have donated services, gift and decorating items, jewelry and
entertainment packages.
Tickets are $65 per person and are available through the Girls
Inc. administrative office at 656-1697.
Women's Club to meet
The University Women's Club will hold its first meeting at 7:30
p.m., Thursday, Sept. 17, at the President's House, 47 Kent Way.
At the meeting, the fall program will be outlined. The guest
speaker is Betty J. Paulanka, dean of the College of Nursing.
NSF professorships
The National Science Foundation (NSF) recently announced the
availability of "NSF Visiting Professorships for Women." The program
enables a woman scientist or engineer to undertake advanced research
at a host institution. In addition to her research duties, the
visiting professor undertakes lecturing, counseling and other
interactive activities to increase the visibility of women scientists
in the academic environment.
Copies of the announcement are available from the Office of
Women's Affairs, 303 Hullihen Hall. Applications must be postmarked by
Nov. 1.
Out/Right meeting
Out/Right, the Gay and Lesbian Academic Coalition, will hold its
first meeting at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Williamson Room
of the Perkins Student Center.
Gay and lesbian faculty and staff are invited to attend and to
bring other gay and lesbian University colleagues. For further

Saturday math classes
Registration will open on Monday, Sept. 21, for the fall session
of the University's Saturday Morning Math, a special program of math
enrichment through problem-solving and computer fun for students in
grades one through eight.
Classes will be held for six consecutive Saturdays, beginning
Oct. 17 at the University's Mathematical Sciences Teaching and
Learning Center. Three sections will be offered.
Cost of the session is $35. For information or application

GUR grants available
The regular budget of the University provides funds for
individual research and professional development through the General
University Research program (GUR). Full-time faculty and professional
staff are encouraged to apply for these grants, which are awarded
primarily in the arts, humanities and social sciences.
The deadlines for submitting applications to department chairs is
Oct. 26. For GUR guidelines and an application, call the Office of the

Mammogram & more
The University, Medical Center of Delaware, American Cancer
Society and WDEL radio are teaming up for a new breast cancer
awareness program this fall.
For the month of October, the program will offer two free tickets
to either of the University's November home football games to women
who get an exam on the Mammography of Delaware mobile van that travels
the state. One hundred women will be eligible for two free tickets
which will be given at the mammogram appointment.
The program will kick off at the West Chester home game on Sept.
26, and run for four weeks, or until the tickets are gone. Mammography
of Delaware charges $70 for a mammogram, but those who cannot pay the
cost and meet eligibility guidelines can get the test at no charge.

Women scholars fund
The Commission on the Status of Women has announced that matching
funds are available for the 1992-93 fiscal year to fund honoraria and
travel for visiting women scholars.
The program, established in 1981, is designed to assist
departments in bringing women scholars to campus. Preference is given
to departments with small numbers of women on the faculty. Each
application will be evaluated when it is received.

Strides against cancer
The American Cancer Society is sponsoring a new event called
Making Strides Against Cancer. The non-competitive, five-mile
move-along-a-thon-in which participants may walk, run, wheelchair,
roller skate or walk a dog or baby carriage-is set for 1:30 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 4, in MBNA's Westgate Corporate Center, on Route 4 in
Newark.
Registration will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. For information or to
receive a registration form, call 324-4227. Registration forms also
may be picked up at Happy Harry's drugstores.
Financial volunteers
The University's Cooperative Extension program in New Castle
County will offer Volunteer Financial Counseling Program training. The
training will be provided to volunteer men and women to enable them to
educate families concerning financial management.
The free training will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Mondays,
starting Oct. 19, and continuing until Nov. 16 at the New Castle
County Cooperative Extension Office, in Room 032 of Townsend Hall.
Test dates changed
Skills assessment placement tests for literacy classes beginning
Sept. 29 have been changed to 1-4 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 22. For more

Comments on quilting
A lecture on "The Definitive American Quilt" will be presented at
7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22, in 100 Kirkbride Lecture Hall. Speaker will
be Bernice Steinbaum of the Steinbaum Gallery. A reception will follow
in the University Gallery, currently the site of a quilt exhibition.
