International Opportunities
The following grants are offered by the International Research
and Exchanges Board (IREX).
Individual Advanced Research Opportunities (IARO) in Central and
Eastern Europe (9/17-2)-Research placement is available for
pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars at institutions in Albania,
Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and the former
Yugoslav republics for periods of two to 12 months. Grant provisions
include round-trip airfare and stipend. Applications are accepted in
all disciplines. Applicants must have a command of the host-country
language sufficient for research. Deadline for applications is Nov. 1.
IARO in the states of the former Soviet Union (9/17-3)-Research
opportunities are available in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia,
Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia,
Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan in all disciplines
for periods of two to 12 months. In addition, humanities and social
science proposals for longer periods (nine to 12 months) are being
accepted for the same countries. Round-trip airfare and stipend will
be provided. Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree and
have a command of the host-country language sufficient for research.
Deadline is Nov. 1.
IARO in Mongolia (9/17-4) -Research opportunities for pre-doctoral and
post-doctoral scholars are available for periods of two to 10 months
at institutions in Mongolia. All disciplines are eligible, but
priority is given to applicants in the humanities and social sciences.
Round-trip airfare and stipend provided. Candidates must have a
command of Mongolian sufficient for research. Deadline is Nov. 1.
On-Site Language Training (OSLT) in Central and Eastern Europe
(9/17-5)- Language-training grants are available to applicants seeking
to acquire advanced proficiency in a language for the purposes of
research and teaching. Grants are for periods of two to 12 months.
Round-trip airfare and a stipend provided. Applications from all
academic levels- from graduate students to professors-are accepted.
Applicants must have already begun formal study of the host-country
language prior to participation. Deadline is Nov. 1.
OSLT in the states of the former Soviet Union Region
(9/17-6)-Language-training grants are available to applicants seeking
proficiency, for the purposes of teaching and research, in the
languages of (excluding Russian) Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus,
Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova,
Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Grants are
awarded for periods of two to 12 months. Round-trip airfare and
stipends will be given. Participation is open to all academic levels,
from graduate students to professors, who have already begun formal
study of the language and have exhausted all language training
opportunities in the U.S. Nov. 1 is the deadline. All OSLT candidates
may also apply for an individual research grant in the same country.
Developmental fellowships (9/17-7)- Fellowships prepare scholars in
the U. S. for eventual field research in Central and Eastern Europe,
the former Soviet Union and Mongolia. Participants will gain
background in language and area studies in these regions to pursue
research in such fields as archaeology, anthropology, business,
economics, geography, demography, law, musicology, political science,
psychology, sociology and other fields under-represented in American
research on the region. Support may last from three to 24 months.
Advanced doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers may apply.
Participants should expect to apply for a subsequent IREX exchange
grant to undertake research in the region. Application deadline is
Feb. 15.
Slavonic studies seminar (9/17-8)-One-month fellowships are available
for scholars wishing to improve their knowledge of the Bulgarian
language at the Slavonic studies seminars held during August, either
in Sofia or Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria. Provisions include round-trip
transportation and lodging, tuition and local costs. Candidates may be
from any academic level, from graduate student to professor, and
should already have begun formal study of the Bulgarian language.
Deadline is Nov. 1.
Summer language program for college and university instructors of
languages of the states of the former Soviet Union (9/17-9)- Advanced
language training is provided to university instructors of Russian and
other languages of the states of the former Soviet Union. Participants
receive training on-site for seven weeks at an appropriate
institution. Round-trip airfare and a stipend are included. For the
Russian-language training, candidates must have the equivalent of four
years of college-level Russian, be employed as teachers of Russian at
the university level and have a minimum of two years' teaching
experience. For training in non-Russian languages, candidates must
have intermediate to advanced knowledge of the language and two years
of teaching experience. Deadline is Dec. 15.
Short-term travel grants (9/17-10)-The following three travel grants
are for scholarly projects in the humanities and social sciences
involving Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union and
Mongolia. Support is provided for one to two weeks for individuals who
do not require administrative assistance (visas, housing, etc.).
Provisions include airfare and a per-diem, in cases where the
host-country will not provide support. Deadlines are Oct. 1, Feb. 1,
and June 1.
* Grants for collaborative activities- Scholars working with
colleagues from the above-mentioned regions may travel abroad or
invite their colleagues to the U.S. Foreign scholars may also be
invited to the U.S. to lecture or attend conferences.
* Senior scholar travel grants-For scholars formally invited
to present papers at conferences or consult in any of the above
regions.
* Grants for independent, short-term research-For scholars
conducting library or archival research, carrying out interviews,
etc. in any of the above regions except Mongolia.
Committee on Scholarly Communication with the People's Republic of
China (CSCPRC) (9/17-11)-CSCPRC offers the following opportunities for
scholars in the fields of humanities and the social sciences to visit
China or have Chinese scholars in these fields visit the U.S.
* Research program-Supports individuals with the Ph.D. or
equivalent to conduct in-depth research on China, the Chinese
portion of a comparative study or exploratory research on an
aspect of contemporary China. Also supports limited research in
Hong Kong or elsewhere in East Asia to supplement research in the
PRC. Tenure is normally two months to one year between July 1, 1993,
and Dec. 31, 1994. Deadline is Oct. 10.
* Graduate program-Supports graduate students and individuals with an
M.A. in doing coursework and/or dissertation research at a Chinese
university or research institute. Duration of study must be at least
one academic year, beginning September 1993. Candidates must have
the equivalent of three years of college-level study in Chinese.
Deadline is Oct. 10.
* China Conference travel grants- Partially supports travel costs
for individuals with the Ph.D. to attend conferences in the PRC to
which applicants have been invited to present results of recent
research. Travel dates must be between July 1 and Dec. 31, 1993.
Deadline is dependant upon the conference date (i.e. for a conference
between December 1992 and February 1993, the deadline is Oct. 1).
* Chinese fellowships for scholarly development-Chinese scholars with
the equivalent of the M.A. or Ph.D. may be nominated by an American
host to come to the U.S. for research and collaborative academic
programs. The grant offers living and modest travel expenses for
one semester between August 1993 and August 1994. Deadline is Nov. 14.
The Academy Scholars Program (9/17-12)- The Harvard Academy for
International and Area Studies is sponsoring the program for those
pursuing an academic career involving both a social science discipline
and a particular area of the world. The Harvard Academy sponsors
scholars for two years to conduct either dissertation or post-doctoral
research in their chosen field. Applications for the 1993-94 academic
year are due by Oct. 15.
Fulbright-Hays training grant programs (9/17-14)-Deadline for the
following two grants is Oct. 30.
* Faculty Research Abroad Fellowship Program-Offers opportunities
to university faculty members for research and study abroad in
modern foreign languages and area studies.
* Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship Program-Graduate
students are offered the chance to engage in full-time
dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and
area studies.
Fellowships for Thesis Research related to Sub-Saharan Africa
(9/17-15) -The Social Science Research Council offers fellowships for
doctoral dissertation research in the social sciences and humanities
in Africa south of the Sahara. Deadline is Nov. 1. Advanced research
grants for field research and comparative, theoretical research that
proposes more than the analysis of previously gathered materials are
also available; deadline is Dec. 1. In addition, SSR offers
fellowships for year-long seminars examining defined areas of inquiry;
deadline not yet set.
Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program, 1993-94 (9/17-16)
-Participating American colleges and universities may invite scholars
from abroad to teach courses at the American host university.
Institutions may host scholars from sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and
the Pacific, the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, Latin America
and the Caribbean. Through a special residency program, an official
from the European ommunity may be hosted. Preference is given in the
humanities and social sciences, but other fields focusing on
international issues will be considered. The program provides for
travel for the scholar, a stipend and allowances for books and other
professional expenses. Most grantees are academics who teach at the
university level, but professionals and artists may also participate.
Deadline is Nov. 1.
The Rockefeller Foundation 1993-94 humanities fellowships (9/17-17)-Is
designed for scholars whose work extends international or
intercultural scholarship. Individuals can apply for resident
fellowships at 23 American universities. Applications are particularly
encouraged for programs concerned with non-Western cultures and global
environmental issues. Scholars will pursue individual research toward
publication at the host institution and also participate in seminars,
conferences or other collaborative activities with the host
institution. A brief letter describing the proposal is due by Dec. 1.
Deadlines vary between host universities.
United States Institute of Peace (9/17-18)- Proposals are being
accepted in the following areas for 1993 grants. Grants are generally
for one to two years and are usually in the range of $40,000-$60,000.
Deadline for grant applications is Jan. 2.
* Solicitation A: Proposals addressing the relationship between
democratization and peace-building in Africa; the role of
African regional institutions in maintaining peace; and the
future course of civil-military relations on the continent.
* Solicitation B: Proposals on the regional impact of Kurdish
activities within Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran; the competition
between Iran and Turkey for influence in central Asia,
particularly their involvement in the Armenia-Azerbaijan
confrontation; and the effect of Iranian-Syrian relationships
upon Israel-Arab relations and the peace process.
* Solicitation C: Proposals for training programs to enhance the
ability of local actors in Eastern Europe, the former Soviet
Union, Africa, Asia and Latin America to sharpen peace-making
skills.
Cooperation in applied science and technology (9/17-19)-The National
Research Council is inviting applications from American universities
interested in hosting scientists from the former Soviet Union to carry
out joint research in the U.S. Incentive grants of between
$10,000-$12,000 will be awarded by the Agency for International
Development to American hosts. The program is aimed at scientists and
engineers who previously worked in the ex-Soviet defense sector,
especially in the fields of mathematics, statistics, computer theory,
aeronautics, control theory, physics, materials science, nuclear
science, electronics, chemistry, microbiology, virology and all
branches of engineering. American hosts and Soviet scientists must
have doctoral degrees or equivalent. The grants will be awarded for
periods of nine months beginning in the 1993 calendar year. Deadline
is March 1.
KiSwahili course in Tanzania (9/17-20)- The Yale Center for
International and Area Studies is offering an intensive eight-week
course in KiSwahili in Tanzania, beginning in June. Applicants should
have studied the language for at least two years.
Community-level public health internships (9/17-21)-The University of
Minnesota is offering internships in Kenya, Senegal and Morocco to
undergraduates, graduates and professionals. Full-time University of
Minnesota credit will be earned. Financial aid and scholarships are
available.
Fellowships for African graduate students (9/17-22)-Conducting
master's or Ph.D. thesis field research related to rice production in
West Africa are available from the West Africa Rice Development
Association. Applicants should be prepared to work in West Africa.
