Associate dean for research and graduate studies named         
                                                               
     Thomas R. Scott, chairperson of the Department of Psychology    
since 1983, has been named associate dean for research and graduate  
studies in the College of Arts and Science, effective Sept. 1.       
     The primary duties of the associate dean are to improve the     
atmosphere for research and scholarship in the college, to promote the        
acquisition of extramural funding and to advocate for increased      
University and external support for graduate education.              
     In the newly established position, Scott also will participate in        
determining the distribution of indirect cost recovery funds for the 
college and ongoing evaluation of graduate programs.                 
     Ralph Exline will serve as interim chairperson in psychology.   
Scott, who was elected to fellowship in the American Psychological   
Association and to the executive committee of the Council of Graduate
Departments of Psychology, now serves as chairperson of two national 
committees on the ethical use of research subjects in neuroscience.  
     Scott has published 160 journal articles, book chapters,  
technical reports and reviews. He was a recipient of the University's
Excellence-in-Teaching Award in 1981.
