Memorial tribute offered at meeting
At the semiannual general faculty meeting Monday, a tribute to the
late Harold C. Beachell, professor emeritus of chemistry, was given by his
departmental colleague Colin Trumbore.
Dr. Beachell, who died Feb. 21, joined the University in 1946 as an
assistant professor of analytical and physical chemistry. A 50-year member
of the American Chemical Society, he had co-authored more than 45 articles
for professional journals, held four U.S. patents and aided in the design
of rocket engines for the U.S. Air Force.
According to Trumbore, Beachell helped establish the reputation of the
chemistry department during three decades of growth during which the number
of chemistry faculty increased from six to 25. Beachell retired in 1975.
