U.D. asks state for $8 million in support of four projects

University of Delaware officials today (April 21) presented a 1993-94
request to the state for $8 million in capital construction support,
including $1 million for completion of the Lamott du Pont Laboratory-a
state-of-the-art facility nearing completion and scheduled to be occupied
in June.
"The University is very appreciative of the financial support it has
received from the state of Delaware for its capital construction projects,"
President David P. Roselle told members of the General Assembly's Joint
Legislative Committee on the Capital Improvement Program at a hearing in
Dover.
He cited the Carpenter Center, a joint project supported by $12
million in state funds and $6.5 million raised by the University from
alumni and friends. This multi-purpose facility opened in October and
already has hosted well over 100,000 visitors for a wide variety of sports
and entertainment events.
The University's proposal for 1993-94 contains four items, the
president said, and, in priority order, they include:

       * $1 million to complete the Lamott du Pont Laboratory, bringing the
state's contribution to $17 million, the total requested when the
         project began four years ago;
       * $1 million for facilities renewal and renovation-a high priority
for the University, which has been investing heavily in renewing
         buildings and infrastructure;
       * $4 million for the renovation and expansion of Colburn Laboratory
for the Department of Chemical Engineering-the first in a total
request for $15 million over a four-year period, to be matched
with $7 million in private support to be raised by the
         University; and
       * $2 million for the renovation and expansion of Purnell Hall, home
of the College of Business and Economics-the first in a total
request for $11 million over four years, to be matched with $4
million the University proposes to raise from the private sector.

"The University is an exemplary steward of its physical resources as
it has reallocated funds for facility maintenance and renewal as a priority
in difficult economic times," Roselle told the legislators.
"We are also unique among state-related agencies in our ability to
leverage funds provided by the state with both University and private
resources," he said.
The University's request is an increase over the capital funding level
recommended by former Gov. Castle, who set support at $4 million for three
projects-$1 million for the Lamott du Pont Laboratory, $1 million for
building renewal and $2 million for Colburn Laboratory.
