     - Modernity In Africa: A Dilemma? (4/22-1)-This six-week session for
college and university faculty will focus on the dilemma of modernity in
Africa as expressed in texts representing thematic progression of African
literature in the European languages. "Literature and Apartheid" along with

     - United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Bank (WB) and
World Health Organization (WHO) (4/22-2)-The UNDP, WB and WHO are
co-sponsoring research and development, project development from the
Special Program for the Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR)
and research capability strengthening. Grants are awarded for work related
to the control of TDR's target diseases and to countries where these

     - Rotary International (4/22-3)-If you are a student motivated by
studies abroad, the Rotary International awards thousands of grants yearly

     - Johann Jacobs Foundation (4/22-4)- Doctoral and independent research
on the study of youth in a changing world is funded by the foundation.

     - The Fulbright Scholars Program (4/22-5)-Worldwide awards for
lecturing and research projects are offered to U.S. citizens with a Ph.D.
or equivalent professional degree. Many awards provide scholars with the
opportunity to put forth their own lecturing or research projects. The
deadline for most projects is Aug. 1. Contact Council for International

     - Ethiopian Research Council (4/22-6)-The council seeks abstracts for
papers for its third annual convention, to be held Sept. 9-12 at Florida
State University. "Uniting World Scholars and Creative Artists" will be

     - Tanzania, Nigeria, Egypt and Sudan (4/22-7)--Programs in these four

     - American University in Cairo (4/22-8)-An African fellowship with
free tuition for two years is offered by the American University in Cairo
to African students for a master's program for the 1993-94 academic year.

     - Rosen Publishing Group (4/22-9)- Scholars interested in writing
about the peoples of Africa for general readership, graduate students,
specialists in the field or other potential writers are encouraged to

     - Lemmermann Foundation Fellowships (4/22-10)-For the 1993-94 academic
year, two 10-million lire grants (approximately $6,500 each in U.S.
currency, as of this month) will be awarded to doctoral candidates for
research in Rome on Roman/Latin archaeology, history, literature and art of
culture from ancient times to present. Application deadline is April 30 and
applicants cannot be above the age of 30 by that time and they must have a
working knowledge of Italian. Applications, along with statement of thesis
topic, curriculum vitae, college grades and two letters of recommendation

     - NAFSA's Russia/Eurasia Awards Program (4/22-11)-Grants up to $10,000
will be awarded to an estimated 140 qualified graduate and junior and
senior undergraduate students beginning or continuing matriculation at an
accredited U.S. college or university in the 1993-94 academic year.
Students must provide proof they expect to receive substantial financial
assistance from their college or university and are studying in one of the
following academic fields specified by USIA-public administration, public
policy, political science, urban planning, economics, business, marketing,
law, education, journalism, social sciences, humanities (excluding fine
arts), library science, English teaching, computer science, agricultural
economics and transportation. Grants funds may be used for any expenses not
covered by the institution's aid package. Funds may not be used for
tuition, expenses for dependents or special fees levied for sponsored
students. Students from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Byelarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgystan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and
Uzbekistan are eligible, with priority given to applicants not currently in
the U.S. Approximately 60 percent of the grants will be awarded to graduate
students. Female applicants are given special consideration as NAFSA
requires a 40 percent participation rate. Students receiving assistance
under the Edmund Muskie Fellowship Program or employed by the government of
Azerbaijan may not apply. NAFSA will only accept applications from U.S.
colleges and universities on behalf of eligible students until May 14.
