Play ball!; Women's softball team looks for a successful season
The efforts of the 1992 softball team did not go unrecognized. The
Blue Hens won the title of "Divisional Statistical Champions in Double
Plays for the '92 Season, to recognize that the team had the highest
overall percentage in this category of all Division 1 schools in the
country.
"That title was a tribute to our defense," according to B.J. Ferguson,
who earned her Blue Hen 200th career coaching victory in a win over Penn,
Sunday April 4.
While the 1993 schedule is not very different from that of the past
seasons, the team's outlook is, according to Ferguson, whose teams have won
two East Coast Conference (ECC) regular season titles (1983 and 1985) and
who was named 1986 ECC Coach of the Year.
"There is not one game on our schedule that is a sure win....We will
be challenged every time we step onto the field, so we will have to be
ready for each game. And we will be," Ferguson said.
Although there is not necessarily one team that is considered a big
rival, Drexel has always been a team that is a tough loss or a very sweet
win, Ferguson said, noting that there are heated contests with all
conference opponents, such as Vermont, Maine, Hartford and Boston.
This year's Blue Hen team boasts six returning letterwomen, including
seniors Michele Rittenhouse and Suzanne Morrison, juniors Christine Glatt
and Lisa Wood and sophomores Lisa Myers and Lisa Kosanovich. The bulk of
the team consists of seven freshmen.
The 1993 season tri-captains are Rittenhouse, Morrison and Glatt.
Ferguson and the team are enjoying the current season, which looks
very promising. The coach said this is going to be the year that the U.D.
softball team surprises a lot of people.
"We have a lot of talented players who have worked very hard," she
said, "and we know our wins won't come easy, but we won't be an easy win
for another team either."
