Staff to present their works in Perkins Student Center Gallery
One dozen amateur artists, who also happen to be members of the
University community, will have their works featured in the first Staff and
Faculty Art Exhibition, which runs from April 19-23 in the Gallery of the
Perkins Student Center.
According to Stirling Miller, senior associate director of admissions
and coordinator of the exhibition, it is difficult for amateur artists to
find an outlet to display their works. He said he thought a show featuring
members of the campus community would be worthwhile.
A newspaper announcement and notices sent to offices generated a
"terrific response," Miller said.
He and Linda Olsen, co-coordinator of the show and a research
associate in University development, were hoping for two or three replies.
Instead, the show will feature 12 artists. The range of expertise is wide.
Some are self-taught while others are taking art lessons. The works include
watercolors, acrylics, oils, sculpture, photography and mixed media.
According to Miller, "Being part of a show is very important for one's
growth as an artist." The staff and faculty art show, he said, has provided
a stimulus for some artists working on pieces. One participant admitted
that having to meet a deadline to complete the work, in order to submit it
for the upcoming show, was a tremendous source of motivation.
Miller explained that it is very difficult for new artists to gain
exposure and, eventually, break into juried shows or gallery exhibits
without prior experience. The staff show, he said, would be a first step
for some of them.
Since the artists featured in the program may submit more than one
work, Miller said there may be more than two dozen pieces on display.
However, each participant was asked the name of one work on the original
application.
The staff and faculty artists and their featured works include:
