Eugene du Pont distinguished scholar awards
This year, 58 of the invited 62 high school seniors came to the
University for the final selection process of the Eugene du Pont
Distinguished Memorial Scholars. Of this group, eight women and eight men
were chosen for the scholarships, which include tuition, room and board,
fees and a book allowance of $550 per year. The scholarships are renewable
for four years as long as a student maintains at least a 3.00 cumulative
grade point average, according to Bruce Walker, associate provost of
admissions and student financial aid.
All the invited students were highly qualified academically with an
average high school grade point index of 3.9 and combined SAT scores
averaging 1419, and even those who were not selected for the du Pont
scholarships will be offered University scholarships.
The 16 selected as du Pont scholars have an average grade point index
of 3.97 and average combined SAT score of 1407. When the selection was
made, the committee took many factors beyond grades into consideration,
such as extracurricular interests, intellectual curiosity, a genuine
interest in learning and the potential to make contributions to society,
Walker said.
Past du Pont scholars have been active participants in the University
community, and many have gone on to graduate schools, law schools and
medical schools, with one becoming a Rhodes Scholar.
The program, in its 13th year, honors Eugene du Pont (1840-1902), a
native Delawarean who served as fourth president of E. I. du Pont de
Nemours & Co. from 1889 until 1902.
