Thomas Kean to address conference
Thomas H. Kean, president of Drew University and governor of New
Jersey from 1982-90, will be the keynote speaker at the University's 16th
annual Student Business Executive Conference, on Wednesday, April 14.
Kean will discuss "Educating America: Needs, Challenges, Solutions" at
8 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. The talk is free and open to the public.
Co-hosted by Merrill Lynch and the College of Business and Economics,
the conference is designed to bring together business majors, academics,
government leaders and corporate management on topics of mutual interest.
Kean, who chairs the New American Schools Development Corp. and the
National Environmental Education and Training Foundation, has taken several
initiatives at Drew, among them stressing the creative use of technology in
the liberal arts and the growing need for international education.
Rated among America's five most effective governors by Newsweek, he
was noted for tax cuts that spurred 750,000 new jobs, a federally
replicated welfare reform program, landmark environmental policies and more
than 30 education reforms. He has served on the President's Education
Policy Advisory Committee and as chair of the Education Commission of the
States and the National Governors' Association's Task Force on Teaching.
Kean is on the board of a number of organizations, including the
National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Carnegie
Corp. of New York and the National Endowment for Democracy. For information
