The Indigo Girls-Amy Ray and Emily Saliers-met in the sixth grade in
Decatur, Ga., and have been singing together since they were in high
school.
The group began recording in 1985, and by 1987 had released its first
full-length album, Strange Fire, on its own Indigo label.
The following year, the group signed with Epic Records, and a
self-titled album was released early in 1989. Participating on the album
were Michael Stipe and other members of R.E.M., Hothouse Flowers and Luka
Bloom. A single from that album, Closer to Fine, reached No. 52 on
Billboard's "Hot 100," and the album stayed on the chart for 22 weeks,
peaking at No. 22. The album won a Grammy for "Best Contemporary Folk
Recording."
1990 saw the release of the group's second Epic recording, Nomads*
Indians*Saints, with a supporting cast including Mary-Chapin Carpenter, the
Ellen James Society and drummers Jim Keltner and Kenny Aronoff.
The single, "Hammer and a Nail," from that album was nominated for a
Grammy Award as best contemporary folk recording.
In 1991, the Indigo Girls released an eight-song EP, Back on the Bus,
Y'All, of live recordings from concerts at Notre Dame University, West
Georgia College and the Uptown Lounge in Athens, Ga.
This EP brought the group its fourth Grammy nomination.
Last May, the Indigo Girls released its most recent album, Rites of
Passage, which sold more than half a million copies in the first 12 weeks.
The Indigo Girls completed a major European tour last fall, performing
both solo concerts and co-headlining several shows with the Neville
Brothers. Since November, the groups has been touring the U.S.
