Summer sports camps announced
The University has announced six summer sports day camps for
youngsters; five overnight sports camps and a new adult tennis camp.
Day camps
* Diving: Learn how to dive or strengthen your present diving ability.
Sign up for one or both two-week long sessions from June 17-30 and again
from July 1-14. Beginners dive from 9-10 a.m., intermediates from 10-11
a.m. and advanced from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Cost is $75 for beginners and
intermediates; $125 for advanced. Camp is open to youths ages 9-17.
* Girl's All Sports: A well-rounded athletic experience for girls ages
7-12. Emphasis will be placed on encouraging the camper to explore a
variety of sports. The camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., daily, June 28
through July 2. Cost is $120.
* Field Hockey: This camp incorporates fun with the learning of basic
skills and concepts of the game. Each session will include small game
activities along with scrimmage play. The session runs from 9 a.m. to 3
p.m., July 19-23, at a cost of $120. This year an optional evening open
play session will be offered.
* Cross Country: This camp covers many important topics including
types of training, injuries, flexibility, race strategy, biomechanics and
more. The camp is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 26 through 30, at a
cost of $120.
* Soccer: Offered for players ages 8-17, the camp offers an
understanding of basic soccer skills and tactics in a relaxed learning
environment. Sessions are offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 26-30 and
from Aug. 2-6. Cost is $100.
* Youth Tennis: This camp is designed to give young tennis players the
opportunity to learn basic strokes, techniques and strategies. Sessions run
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., July 5-9, July 19-23, July 26-30 and Aug. 2-6.
Children ages 8-15 may register. Cost is $150.
Overnight camps
* Boys' Basketball: The purpose of this camp is the development of
basic skills and techniques for both offensive and defensive success.
Sessions are offered June 20-24, July 12-16 and Aug. 1-5 for youth ages
8-17. Costs range from $125 to $245, and discounts are available for teams
registering five or more players.
* Girls' Basketball: The goal of this camp is to concentrate on
fundamentals and help develop a well-rounded complete basketball player.
Dates are July 5-9 for players ages 9-17. Costs range from $135 to $245.
* Girls' Shooting Camp: The primary goal of this camp is to teach
young basketball players the fundamentals of shooting. The session runs
from June 25-27 for players ages 9-17. Costs are $100 for day camp and $150
for overnight camp.
* Football: This camp is designed to help players improve basic skills
and learn techniques that are general to all sound offensive and defensive
systems. For ages 12-18, the camp will be offered from July 11-14. Costs
are $230 for overnight camp, $190 for extended day camp and $150 for day
camp. Discounts are available for teams registering eight or more players.
* Volleyball: The purpose of this camp is to improve the individual
skills of players. Camp students will be introduced to new techniques in
offensive and defensive strategies. Sessions run from July 18-23 and July
25-30, and there is a coach's clinic scheduled on July 17. Costs range from
$130 to $280 for players in grades six and up.
The new adult tennis camp is designed to teach mental toughness as
well as on court drilling to develop a competitive edge. Cost is $140 for
the instruction and lecture series and $60 for the lectures only. Sessions
run from 6-9 p.m., July 19-22, July 26-29 and Aug. 2-5.
