Computer Resource Persons: Help on the front lines
Last spring, on the recommendation of a special task force, Computing
and Network Services (CNS) and Employee Development jointly initiated a
program to recognize and provide training for newly appointed computer
resource persons (CRPs).
CPRs, appointed by supervisors in 134 academic and administrative
departments, were given the responsibility of providing first-level
computing support. They help staff on-site to use computing in their work
and to move toward more self-reliance with existing equipment.
CNS User Services and Employee Development have designed a training
curriculum for the current year. Classes to assist CRPs in acquiring the
required skills to perform their tasks are offered each month. All classes
and meetings are announced through the CRPnews Bulletin Board on MVS. Those
who do not use MVS will receive a mail message on their "home" system.
In addition to the training sessions, User Services has assigned staff
members as "mentors" to the CRPs. A mentor will assist in resolving
computing questions in their CPR's unit. As one CRP commented, "Now, I have
a friend in the computing organization." Currently, User Services staff
members are contacting their CRPs to find out how units use computing and
to show the CRPs what kinds of support User Services already provides.
CRPs and users should still call the CNS Consulting Center Helpline at
831-6000 if they are having trouble logging onto MVS, or for help with
basic computing questions.
According th Karen Kral, senior consultant and analyst II in CNS User
Services, Computing and Network Services and Employee Development are
committed to the Computer Resource Person program. CRPs are encouraged to
take advantage of the classes and meetings designed specifically for them.
CNS User Services staff members have expertise in many areas of computing.
Through the CRPs and mentor program, User Services hopes to share that
knowledge to enable departments to work more efficiently and productively.
