Personal protective equipment policies approved

A revised eye protection policy and a new personal protective
equipment policy, recommended by the Risk Management Advisory Council, were
approved by President David P. Roselle.
"We encourage department heads to give support and positive
reinforcement to these policy changes, which have been designed to promote
additional safety in the workplace," Robin Elliott, director of the
Department of Occupational Health and Safety, said.
Elliott has held meetings with department chairpersons, their
representatives and others involved in safety issues to inform them about
the new policies.

EYE PROTECTION POLICY 7-23
Eye protection shall be used by all individuals, including contract
personnel and visitors, in any designated area involving mechanical or
physical activities that are reasonably judged to be hazardous to the eye.
Eye protection devices must be approved by the American National
Standards Institute, and glasses or goggles meeting this requirement will
be stamped ANSI Z87 or Z87. All safety glasses must have protective side
pieces.
Each department or unit must provide employees with eye protection
devices in keeping with their jobs duties.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT 7-40
Departmental chemical hygiene officers or safety chairpersons should
determine personal protective equipment requirements applicable to their
departments by conducting a Job Hazard Analysis review for each position.
Forms for the reviews are available from the Department of Occupational
Health and Safety.
The requirements established by departments also must incorporate
those of regulatory agencies, such as the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
When required, personal protective equipment must be used by all
individuals, including contract personnel and visitors. Initial and
refresher training must be provided to individuals about the use of
personal protective equipment. It is suggested that this training be
combined with annual Chemical Hygiene Plan training.

Each department or unit is required to comply with these policies by
providing personal protective equipment to employees and enforcing their
use. A copy of the departmental plan for assessing compliance with the
policies must be forwarded to the Department of Occupational Health and
Safety. For more information, call 831-8475.
