Program to upgrade vehicles
Campus motor pool has a new policy on maintaining and replacing its
vehicles which are currently in operation, according to Mark Tozer, motor
pool service coordinator.
The purchase of 12 new vehicles represents the start of a program to
upgrade the appearance and reliability of the pool's fleet.
In the past, the University motor pool made necessary repairs to its
vehicles in order to obtain the maximum number of miles possible from each.
Tozer conducted a study comparing the cost of maintaining vehicles
with over 50,000 miles as opposed to trading them in.
He found it is less expensive to trade vehicles in before they lose
substantial value than to keep them and face major repair bills.
Not only will new cars improve the reliability of the pool, but they
will look better as well.
At this time, Tozer explained, the new policy affects only the 32
vehicles in the motor pool, which, operates as a "mini" car rental agency
on campus, renting vehicles to faculty, staff and students for
University-related events and activities.
Recent replacements in the motor pool include six Chevrolet Corsicas,
two Ford Tauruses, a Ford Taurus station wagon, a Ford Aerostar minivan, a
Ford 15-passenger van and a Chrysler 15-passenger van.
