WalkAmerica to step off April 25

This year's March of Dimes WalkAmerica-the country's oldest, largest
and most successful walking event-will begin with a check-in starting at 8
a.m., Sunday, April 25, at Delaware Stadium. The walk itself will start at
9 a.m.
Businesses, organizations and schools are encouraged to participate as
teams in this year's walk. In 1992, 88 percent of the $190,000 raised in
New Castle County was a direct result of teamwalk participation, where five
or more individuals walk as a unit.
Univeristy president David P. Roselle is honorary chairperson of the
1993 WalkAmerica.
The funds raised will support the March of Dimes Campaign for
Healthier Babies-a nationwide effort to improve the health of babies by
preventing birth defects, low birth weight and infant death. Birth defects
are the nation's number-one child health problem, affecting one out of
every 14 babies born in the United States.
Low birth weight (5.5 pounds or less) is the number-one birth defect.
Every year in Delaware, over 600 babies are born with low birth weights,
and one-sixth of them die as a result.
The funds raised for the Delaware and Upper Shore of Maryland chapter
will support programs including Babies and You, a free prenatal health
education program, and Rockabye, a contemporary program to address teenage
pregnancy.
