Students do windows in mall
Six University students had an opportunity to put what they learned
during Winter Session on view for all to see.
In February, several fashion merchandising majors decorated windows
for Valentine's Day displays in Concord Mall. In a Winter Session class on
"Fashion Display," the class had just learned how to decorate theme
windows, said classroom instructor Karen Schaeffer, associate professor in
textiles design and consumer economics. The students were invited to show
off their talents by mall director Angel Herlth.
"I knew the students were qualified to do the job, and it went well
with the class," said Schaeffer, who offered extra credit to the students
involved.
The students made all the decisions for the decorating. "The stores
gave us the merchandise they wanted us to display and we did the rest of
the work," said Julie Rhine, a junior. She and her partner, Kerry Sheehan,
also a junior, spent about five hours preparing the display for Wilson
Leather and Suede. They put together Valentine's Day balloons, big paper
hearts and placed the merchandise into the windows for shoppers to enjoy.
Rhine said that despite this experience, she does not plan to design
windows as a career. "I would like to be in the business or management end
of the field. Still, this designing was a very good experience for me."
In addition to the experience, the students competed for prizes.
Junior Colleen Ritter and senior Lisa Faber won a gift certificate for
their display at the American Eagle shop. Rhine and Sheehan received a gift
certificate for their display at Wilson Leather and Suede. Sophomore
Allison Ahr and senior Jennifer Meola decorated windows for Casual Corner
and Charter Club.
All students received letters of recognition for their work.
Schaeffer said she is proud of the students' work. "They are a
creative group of people, and they did a fabulous job," she said.
