Recycling Q&A

* Can newspaper be recycled?
     Currently, the University is not promoting a newspaper recycling
program. However, if an office collects and stores newspapers over time and
accumulates large quantities, Plant Operations will make arrangements to
have the newspapers picked up. Otherwise, employees are encouraged to use
the Recycle Delaware sites.

* Where does recyclable paper go?
     Paper to be recycled is bagged by custodians, placed at the recycling
pick-up sites and collected twice a week by White Line Recycling. White
Line takes the paper to its plant in Georgetown, where it is sorted,
weighed and baled into white and commingled stacks. White paper is put into
2,000-pound bales and shipped to processing plants, where it is turned back
into recycled paper. Commingled paper is baled in the same way but is
converted into tissues, paper towels and other low-grade paper products.
     To date, nothing that the University has recycled through White Line
has been taken to a landfill.

* What can I do with materials that the University doesn't recycle but are
still recyclable?
     Take them to one of several Recycle Delaware sites in Newark.
