Pledges made for minority aid

     Last fall, the Center for Black Culture held its first Black Alumni
and Friends Phonathon.
     Participants in the first-ever telephone solicitation effort by the
center called alumni and friends seeking pledges for support of the Center
for Black Culture, the Black Alumni Organization and the minority
scholarship fund.
     The three-night effort resulted in pledges of $6,913.21 for minority
scholarships, which are administered by the Office of Minority Affairs;
$4,857.17 for the Center for Black Culture; and $1,973.21 for the Black
Alumni Organization.
     According to Vernese Edghill, director of the Center for Black
Culture, 26 student volunteers, two alumni and four University
administrators contacted approximately 500 African-American alumni and
friends. During the conversations, current students shared information
about services offered to minority students on campus.
     Logistical support was provided by Emma Amuti, development associate,
and Joseph Bradley, assistant coordinator, both in the Office of University
Development.
