To the University community

          FROM: President David P. Roselle

We, as a University community, are committed to making our campus
more hospitable for students, faculty and staff from diverse cultural
and ethnic backgrounds and with diverse interests. Accordingly, the
University has instituted a number of programs and services designed
to meet the unique needs of special campus populations. This fall, we
will coordinate these activities through a Campus Diversity Office.
This restructured unit will provide counseling, referral services
and programming support for individuals and groups concerned with
issues of race, gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation and
physical abilities. Staffed by the offices of affirmative action,
women's affairs and multicultural programs, the campus diversity unit
will also draw upon the talent and expertise of University faculty and
staff. These individuals will work with Judith Gibson, assistant vice
president for affirmative action and multicultural programs, to assure
that diversity issues are addressed effectively.
I am confident that this integrated approach will make available
staff support for the needs identified by several campus
constituencies. In this way, it should be possible to move closer to
our goal of providing a campus climate that is accommodating to all
members of our community.
