Elder-care certificate program to begin this spring
A series of courses leading to a certificate in elder care will be
presented by the Division of Continuing Education this spring on the Newark
campus.
Geared toward professionals and those who plan to work with the
elderly, the certificate program provides the opportunity to systematically
study aging from an interdisciplinary perspective, by examining the
specific changes common to older adults within the context of the
contemporary social and economic community in which the changes occur.
By the year 2015, Delaware's population over the age of 60 is
projected to increase 49 percent, and the number of adults 85 and older is
expected to increase by 106 percent.
Students in this certificate program will further their knowledge of
the aging process and the special needs of the elderly, develop their
management and interpersonal skills to better provide leadership in an
administrative position, gain credentials that can improve their
competitiveness in the job market and increase their understanding of the
elderly as individuals who live independently in the community, as well as
in institutions that have been developed to meet their needs.
Individuals do not have to be formally admitted into the program in
order to register for individual courses.
Three 10-session courses will be offered from 6 to 9 p.m. They
include"Introduction to Gerontology," beginning Feb. 15; "Human Services
for the Elderly," beginning Feb. 16; and "Multicultural Aspects of Aging,"
beginning Feb. 17. In addition, an afternoon workshop, "Financial/Legal
Planning and Health/Living Options," will be held on March 14.
