String quartet sets lunchtime concert, to open new series

This month, the Mendelssohn String Quartet will present a concert and
a lunchtime talk on the Newark campus and open a southern Delaware Music
series in Lewes.
The concert will be presented at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, in the
Loudis Recital Hall of the Amy E. du Pont Music Building.
In residence at the University since 1989, the Mendelssohn Quartet
will be joined that evening by faculty guest artist, Michael Steinberg,
piano.
Selections will include Alfred Schnittke's Piano Quintet,
Tchaikovsky's Movement for String Quartet and Brahms' String Quartet in B
Flat.
Tickets, at $6 for adults, $4 for U.D. faculty/staff and senior
citizens and $2 for students, may be purchased in advance in Room 209 of
the music building. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.
On Tuesday, Feb. 16, the Mendelssohn String Quartet will present a
NoonNotes lecture from 12:20 to 1:10 p.m., in the Bacchus Theatre of the
Perkins Student Center.
Part of the Department of Music's Performance Series, the lunchtime
program is free and open to the public. Those attending are invited to
bring a bag lunch.
The Mendelssohn String Quartet also will open the University's new
Chamber Music South series with a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 20,
at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes.
Chamber Music South, a series of afternoon and evening concerts
featuring faculty artists, replaces the University's Sundays at Four series
that has been offered for three seasons. The new name reflects the addition
of a Saturday evening concert.
On Feb. 20, the Mendelssohn String Quartet will perform Mendelssohn's
String Quartet in e minor, Op. 44 #2 and Brahms' String Quartet in B flat
Major.
Tickets for this concert are $7.50, and reservations are limited to
150. Checks, payable to the University of Delaware, should be sent to:
Chamber Music South, Department of Music, University of Delaware, Newark,
DE 19716. Tickets are available by mail order only. For additional
information, call 831-2577 in Newark or 855-1620 in Georgetown.
Also scheduled in the series are a concert with soprano Marie
Robinson, pianist Julie Nishimura and organist David Herman at 4 p.m.,
Sunday, March 7, at the First Presbyterian Church in Milford; and a
performance by the Del'Arte Wind Quintet at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 23, at the
Old State House on The Green in Dover. Tickets for all three concerts are
available at $20.
