Report of the Commission on the Status of Women
International Women's Day
International Women's Day on Monday, March 8, will celebrate women and
women's accomplishments through varied events and talks. The campus
celebration will culminate with a concert by the acoustic blues group,
Saffire-The Uppity Blues Women, at 8 p.m. in Newark Hall auditorium.
This Virginia-based group has been featured on national television and
has been nominated for five W.C. Handy Awards considered the grammies of
the blues community.
Currently touring in support of a third album, "Broadcasting" on
Alligator Records, Saffire performs both original songs and their own
versions of such songs as "One Hour Mama," "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My
Baby?" and "Evil Hearted Me."
A critic in The Washington Post wrote, "Even people who don't like the
blues can't resist them."
Tickets for the concert are $3 at the door, and the event is open to
the public.
In other events that day, Sharyn Lenhart, clinical instructor in
psychiatry at Harvard Medical School will give a talk on "Sexual Harassment
and Gender Discrimination in the Workplace," from noon-1:15 p.m., in the
Ewing Room of the Perkins Student Center. This event is open only to the
University community.
Lenhart coordinates a sexual harassment and discrimination concerns
hotline for women physicians. She also writes extensively and presents
workshops on addressing sexual harassment in the workplace.
An art exhibit featuring the works of women artists will be held from
noon-5 p.m., in the Perkins Student Center Gallery. Works from
undergraduate and graduate students, as well as community artists, will be
included in the show. This event is open to the public.
A resource fair will be held from 1-4 p.m., in the Rodney Room of the
the Perkins Student Center. Information on subjects including women's
health and fitness, sexual assault and harassment and women and work will
be provided from various student organizations and University offices.
Alvina Quintana, assistant professor of English at the University,
will present poetry of Chicana women, from 3-4 p.m., in the Ewing Room of
the Perkins Student Center. Devon Miller-Dugan, a University graduate
student in English and others also will present poetry.
This day of events is sponsored by the Commission on the Status of
Women, the Office of Women's Affairs, the University of Delaware Performing
Arts Series, Housing and Residence Life, the Faculty Senate Committee on
Cultural Affairs and Public Events and the Cultural Programming Advisory
Board.
