Jazz saxophonist to perform on campus, at arts center

     Jazz saxophonist Gerald Albright will be in residency at the
University of Delaware and at the Christina Cultural Arts Center from Feb.
24-27 for a series of workshops and a performance.
     Albright has played on albums for a wide variety of artists, including
Anita Baker, Ray Parker, Lola Falana, Atlantic Starr, Olivia Newton-John,
the Temptations and Maurice White. He has toured extensively with many
artists.
     Between 1987 and 1990, he released three albums- Just Between Us,
Bermuda Nights and Dream Come True. His latest release, Live At Birdland
West is a display of saxophone pyrotechnics set in a pure jazz groove.
     A much respected role model for African-American youth, Albright is
well-known for taking his talents beyond the stage and into the communities
where he appears.
     His appearances in the Wilmington and Newark area include:

     * "Gerald Albright: A Closer Look," a lecture at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday,
Feb. 24, in Newark Hall auditorium. Albright will discuss his road to
success and the practical aspects of preparing for recorded and live
performances. The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will
follow at the University's Center for Black Culture.
     * A three-hour residency for local and regional professional musicians
with performance experience from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, at the
Christina Cultural Center, 800 East 7th St., Wilmington. Participants must
possess intermediate to advanced proficiency on their respective
instruments. The focus of the workshop will be the creative process, jazz
theory, master improvisation techniques and composition. This program is
free and open to the public. To register, call the Christina Cultural Arts

     * A two-hour residency for instrumental music students enrolled in
local community schools of the arts, high school bands, community colleges
and university music students. Students must have some exposure to theory,
be able to sight read and have an interest in jazz. This program is free

     * A concert at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 27, in Newark Hall auditorium.
Tickets are $12 for the general public, $8 for University faculty, staff
and senior citizens and $5 for students. Tickets may be purchased by
calling 831-2204 or at B&B Tickettown in Wilmington. Bus transportation to
the University will be provided from the arts center at 6:30 p.m. and again
at 7:15 p.m.

     Albright's residency is sponsored by the Christina Cultural Arts
Center and the University's Performing Arts Series and Center for Black
Culture. The project is made possible by a grant from the Mid-Atlantic Arts
Foundation and the Delaware Division of the Arts.
