If you build it, they will come
If you think there are more fans in the stands cheering on the Blue
Hens men's basketball team this year, your perception is absolutely
correct.
According to Edgar Johnson, director of athletics, after only eight
home games this season, 27,370 fans have attended men's basketball contests
in the Bob Carpenter Center. This, said Johnson, is enough to insure a new
regular season attendance record, especially since last year's total was
27,651 after 13 regular-season home games.
Scott Selheimer, sports information director, said the attendance
total is only about 300 below last year's and, with advance sales to
regular season ticket holders, the 1992-93 Hens followers will exceed last
year's regular record, even though there are two fewer home games this
year.
During the 1991-92 season, average attendance was 2,127 persons per
game, said Selheimer. This season, the average number has risen to 3,421
persons for each contest.
The total attendance for last year, which included the three North
Atlantic Conference playoff games, was a record-setting 35,738 persons.
There are three remaining regular home games for the Blue Hens,
currently 14-5. These include Northeastern University at 7:30 p.m., Friday,
Feb. 19; Boston University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 21; and Drexel
University at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 3.
The Delaware women's basketball team also has experienced an increase
in attendance this year. Its average for the current season stands at 392
per game. During last year's season, excluding doubleheader contests with
the men, the women's team attendance was 255 per contest.
According to Selheimer, the highest non-doubleheader, women's home
game attendance figures this season occurred Jan. 22 against Boston
University (760 fans) and Jan. 24 against Northeastern University (535
fans). These were the highest non-doubleheader attendance figures since the
Immaculata College game Feb. 7, 1981, before a crowd of 641.
There are five remaining home games for the Delaware women, currently
12-7. These include Hartford University at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12;
naionally-ranked University of Vermont (18-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14;
University of Maine at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 26; University of New Hampshire
at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28; and Drexel University at 5:45 p.m., Wednesday,
March 3.
