Campus cardboard stacks up
Corrugated cardboard is a major segment of the University's recycling
program, according to Roger Bowman, supervisor in the Grounds Division of
Plant Operations and coordinator of the campus recycling program.
Since the start of the organized recycling effort in February 1992, 84
tons of corrugated cardboard have been recycled. In the first four months
of the program, from February to June, 35 tons were collected. According to
Bowman, Dining Services is responsible for recycling 75 percent of the
cardboard tonnage collected on campus.
Plant Operations personnel ask those who receive items packaged in
cardboard boxes to please follow the following simple guidelines to assist
the recycling effort:
Cardboard must be emptied of all packaging materials and flattened.
This will improve the efficiency of the recycling operations and the
appearance of the campus. It is acceptable to leave tape, staples and
labels on boxes, although removal is helpful.
Place flattened cardboard in designated trash pick-up areas, where it
will be collected by custodians, and remove from building areas.
University recycling personnel will take it to the baler located in
the General Services Building. There the bales are bound and taken to the
recycling contractor's recycling facilities for processing.
For additional information or assistance in recycling cardboard, call
the Grounds Office at 831-2624.
